Small Plantation Farmers could not afford the same high end houses as Large Plantation owners but they still had nice homes. This example of a Small plantation home is made of brick and is some what symmetrical. On the back side of this house the kitchen was attached.
Parlor
Parlor ~3~
The Parlor is a formal sitting room for greeting guests and conversation. Often their was a separate parlor for women and men. I chose this parlor because the amount of decoration is fitting for a small plantation owner.
Bedroom
Bedroom ~4~
This bedroom would have been for the mother and father of the family. In this house there was four bedrooms. One for the parents, a girls room, a boys room, and a guest room. The bed would have been filled with feathers and each morning you would have to fluff the bed up so that when you would lay down the feathers would spread out evenly. Bedroom were commonly on the upper level of the house and were not used for anything other than sleep.
Kitchen
Kitchen ~1~
The kitchen is where the food is prepared. On the floor there is a stack of wood for fire. Build into the wall on the left side is a small over specifically for bread. The cooking utensils are hanging on a rack on the left side. The larger pots are stacked along the wall. The kitchen was often found either separate or connected to the house to stop the oven from heating the rest of the house. This kitchen dose not have a lot of pots or other utensils which makes it fitting for a small plantation house.
Dinning room
Informal Dinning room ~1~
This is where the foods was eaten when it was just the family. The red curtains is a symbol of wealth. The more dye it takes the more it coasts. Their isn't a lot of fine china on the table so it isn't the type of dinning room that would be found in an extremely wealthy home, however it is fitting for a fairly wealthy home.
Formal Dinning Room
Formal Dinning Room/Pantry ~1~ &~1~
The Formal Dinning Room had a longer more rectangular table for more guests. The women sat on one side across from their husbands. Behind the door is a Pantry where the plates and cooking utensils were kept. It often was accessible from both the formal and Informal dinning rooms.
Laundry/Dish Room
Laundry/Dish Room ~1~
These jobs were done in the same room because they both needed the same things. This includes soap and a tub of hot and cold water to rinse the close or dishes. There would also have been a fire place to heat the water in this room.
Slave Quarters
Slave Quarters ~3~
A small Plantation Owner would own no more than 15 slaves on average. They often lived in housing separate from the main house. This home was quite nice for slave standers, which makes it fitting for a plantation home.
Garden
Garden ~1~
This garden was not used for growing food. Instead it was a common place to hang out. The bigger and more elaborate the garden was the more money you would have had. I picked this garden because It is large and is a good symbol of a plantation owners wealth.
Field
Field ~2~
My plantation grows Tobacco. The process of growing tobacco lasts all year. There is much individual caring for each plant throughout the year. By December the crop is already dried and was rolled into rope and exported back to England.
Tobacco Barn
Tobacco Barn ~1~
After the Tobacco has been harvested it is hung in barns to "sweat" or dry. This stage happens from September-October. Tobacco was the major cash crop in Virginia. A cash crop is a plant grown to be sold instead of eaten.
